Writing

There is not much difference between a sentence, a slogan, an article, an essay and a poem.

A poem can carry more facts than a newspaper article. An essay can deliver more poetry than a poem.  An advertisement can deliver more impact than a newspaper headline.

We study new media technologies but forget to develop the forms of writing that new media must still carry as primary content.

One of the great liberations of the internet has been to give us back the notepad as a form of writing. This has helped break down some of the formal conventions that have stultified media and business communications. But there is a long way to go. Musicians have been seamlessly splicing different genres of music for centuries and visual artists have been doing it for 100 years.

The ascendancy of graphic design and marketing industries during the last half of the 20th century means we are unlikely to underrate the importance of images.

But so much depends on good, new writing. On the wit and weight of words.

"So much depends

upon

a red wheel

barrow

glazed with rain

water..."

It always has and, until we get better at telepathy, it always will.
